Presentation - Exploiting Open Source Software for Highly Reliable and Secure Systems

The Automotive industry is a leader in the use of standards and processes to govern the development of secure and reliable embedded software. They are also heavily leveraging the open source software (OSS) ecosystem, taking advantage of millions of lines of code to augment development and push the innovation envelope.

Embedded software development teams outside of the automotive industry can benefit from adopting many of their processes and approaches in the development of secure and reliable systems. This presentation will discuss best practices for achieving and maintaining open source compliance, applying automotive-driven standards and certification, including MISRA, ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 and ensuring the secure use of open source software.

Adding Support for Networking and Web Technologies to an Embedded System

This presentation discusses the work done, experiences, and lessons learnt from adding an open source TCP/IP network stack (lwIP) and web server to an existing industrial control system running on an ARM Cortex M3-based processor from TI.

The presentation will cover the following:

· Integrating the network stack into the existing software base
· Configuring and using the network stack and web server
· Adding support for HTTP basic authentication to restrict user access
· Using HTTP to remotely access the target system and retrieve operational data
· Debugging hints and tips
· Pitfalls to avoid and other lessons learnt

Workshop - Advanced Debugging for Military and Safety Certification

As code has become more complex, and is running at ever faster speeds, more is being expected and demanded of debug tools. Not only do they need to find bugs, but more often, they need to be able to 'prove the behaviour' of the software under development.

This hands-on workshop will provide attendees with an overview of some of the software analysis techniques needed to ensure your code meets specifications such as ISO26262, DO178C and IEC62304.

The workshop will work through examples of code coverage using data generated in real time by the target core without instrumenting the code.

An analysis of code performance and timing will then be undertaken, including best and worst case response times as well time spent on external events. Along with numerous other detailed analysis options, the above data will then be exported to provide documentary proof of the code performance.

Workshop - Developing ‘Certified’ Embedded Systems

This self-contained workshop is intended for people who have some experience developing (or managing the development of) embedded systems and who may need to create future products in compliance with one or more international safety standards.

While we do not pretend that a 3-hour workshop will make you an “instant expert”, attendance at this event will give you a good grounding in the issues involved in the development of certified embedded systems. Attendance should also help you to determine whether there are any gaps in your current development processes that need to be addressed in order to meet key international standards.

Safety standards considered in this workshop

The specific standards discussed in the workshop are as follows:

DO-178c (aircraft)
IEC 61508 (industrial systems / generic standard)
ISO 26262 (automotive systems)
IEC 62304 (medical systems)
IEC 60730 / IEC 60335 (household goods)


Key features of this workshop :-

  • Focuses on the creation of ‘certified’ embedded systems in a range of sectors.
    Considers and compares current international standards, from household goods to aerospace systems.
  • Demonstrates how modern time-triggered (TT) system architectures can be used in certified systems.
  • Emphasises solutions that maximise the use of ‘off the shelf’ microcontrollers to control costs.
