Introduction :

MISRA, The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association, is a collaboration between vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers and engineering consultancies which seeks to promote best practice in developing safety-related electronic systems in road vehicles and other embedded systems.

MISRA produced MISRA C, a set of guidelines to aid the development of safety related systems in "C" in the automotive world. Since then, MISRA C has been adopted by the wider embedded systems community and has become the dominant, international coding guidelines for the use of "C" in critical systems.

This workshop will provide delegates with a good understanding of why they should be using coding standards, how adopting MISRA C:2012 will help in creating a set of coding standards and how tools are available, that not only help enforce coding standards, but will also make it possible to produce better quality code generally and improve the management of the development process.

 

Presentation 1 :

Coding Standards Are Necessary - Chris Hill, Phaedrus Systems Ltd

Coding standards are necessary, and they help towards better quality products. MISRA-C provides an extremely good basis for creating your own standards. But there are MISRA-C rules that may not be appropriate so MISRA-C has always provided the option of “Deviating”. One of the improvements in MISRA C:2012 is that the rationale behind rules has been greatly expanded, making it easier to decide which rules can be deviated and which maintained. Other improvements, mainly based on feedback of the users of MISRA-C2, have been re-tuning the rules to make them even less ambiguous, breaking down some rules into smaller sections and providing more examples.

Just building the standards is not enough, they have to be enforced. And you can’t rely on the compiler alone. Even a simple linting program is helpful, but more advanced tools not only catch the potential rules infringements but provide metrics on the quality of code.

 

Presentation 2 :

MISRA C:2012, An Overview - presented by Jason Masters, PRQA

PRQA has a strong background in coding standards enforcement. The original MISRA C:1998 coding guidelines are derived from the standards PRQA developed for Ford and Rover and PRQA has had representation on the MISRA C Working Group since its formation.

In this presentation, Jason Masters, our Global Product Manager and senior member of our Customer Support team, will introduce briefly the new MISRA C:2012 Coding Guidelines, outline the main differences with the previous MISRA C:2004 and provide insight from an end-user’s perceptive – what this new standard really means for the software developers.

 

Presentation 3 :

Discussion on the new rules and the benefits of using MISRA C:2012 - presented by LDRA

Listen to Chris Tapp, Chairman of the MISRA C++ Committee, member of the MISRA C Working Group and one of the authors of this important new standard. A number of examples will be given of the new rules and how these will benefit users of MISRA C:2012. We will also discuss how developers can integrate the MISRA standard into the software development process, with full MISRA compliance from requirements traceability through coding, analysis, testing, verification and certification. You will also learn how to automate MISRA standards compliance to your project.
